Singapore Youth Voices for Biodiversity

The Singapore Youth Voices for Biodiversity (SYVB) aims to empower Singapore youths to have a voice in the decision-making process for biodiversity locally and globally. SYVB hopes to align the interests of various youth environment groups in Singapore, encourage collaboration and set a direction towards the 2050 vision of ‘Living in harmony with nature’ by the United Nations Convention of Biological Diversity.

SYVB aspires to achieve this by:

  • Engaging and representing youths in important decision-making processes involving biodiversity
  • Informing youths about the local biodiversity scene
  • Supporting youth-led biodiversity initiatives with resources and guidance
  • Connecting other environmental groups on biodiversity issues

Our Story

The SYVB Team, previously known as the Singapore Youth Convention on Biological Diversity 2020 Consultation Team, was formed in August 2019 with the support and mentorship of The Biodiversity Roundtable (Singapore) and its members. SYVB also recieved guidance from the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) and the ASEAN Centre of Biodiversity (ACB), in particular, the Youth Biodiversity Leaders (YBL) Programme. We have conducted youth consutations and forums and represented youths at local and international groups. Through our events, we compiled the “Aspirations of the Singapore Youth on Biodiversity” document to develop the relevant positions and reflect the hopes and dreams of the youth for biodiversity. The document has been shared with the National Parks Board (NParks), the local focal point for the Convention of Biological Diversity, and GYBN.

About the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN)

GYBN is an international network of youth with the goal of preventing the loss of biodiversity. It was established in August 2012 as an initiative of the International Youth Conference on Biodiversity (IYCB) in 2010. With the support of several groups including the CBD Secretariat, GYBN initiated advocating for youth participation in biodiversity decision-making processes at all levels. As the official youth coordination platform for the CBD, GYBN collaborates with governments, non-government organisations and communities to unite the voices of youth groups globally. GYBN ensures the rights of both the youth and future generations in biodiversity policies and their implementation. You may visit https://www.gybn.org/ to learn more about GYBN.

About the Youth Biodiversity Leaders (YBL) Programme

The ASEAN Youth Biodiversity Leaders (YBLs) are part of the ASEAN Youth Biodiversity Programme, an initiative of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, and the European Union through the Biodiversity Conservation and Management of Protected Areas in ASEAN (BCAMP) Project. YBLs undergo a one-year capacity building fellowship and gain access to mentorship and resources to scale their impact for biodiversity conservation in the ASEAN region.
